Ishida doesn’t remember precisely how he got to the Dream, or why; in fact, everything past a certain point is pretty much a blank. He last remembers the events within Soul Society, his own fights, Ichigo's fight with Byakuya, the defection of the three captains, and leaving that place. He rememberes returning to the real world, and the start of school again. But beyond that first day, and that first disappointment of watching Ichigo and the others rush off to confront Hollows he could no longer fight, he remembers nothing.
Kiwi, for his part, had found the Quincy appealing, especially his willingness to give up the central part of his being in order to, if not protect the greater good, at least eliminate pure evil. Ishida’s calm acceptance of his choice, even with full knowledge of what it would entail, also led Kiwi to pick up the boy and set him in the Hall initially, to find his own feet again.
