Born to an extremely wealthy family on Osiris, River had a close, loving childhood, with two indulgent parents and loving older brother. Her brilliance showed itself from an early age; she would often correct not only her elder brother Simon’s homework, but also his textbooks, and learned her lessons in a fraction of the time it took others her age or older than she. The local schools proved not challenging enough. Then her family heard of a government-run academy—they’d never heard of it before, but the program sounded perfect for River, the most challenging and intensive coursework available anywhere.
The ideal school turned out to be, in reality, a testing ground for the government, however. There, River was subjected to tests and underwent brain operations that she refuses to speak about even to this day, but which continue to give her nightmares and rendered her borderline psychotic. Unable to visit her family or tell them anything, she managed to write letters to Simon in a code; translated, they simply called for help.
Her brother tried for two years to find a way to get her out. Eventually, with the aid of an underground resistance, he managed to smuggle her out in a cryogenic sleep and took flight to the farthest reaches of the universe on the ship Serenity. There, she was woken when Mal, the captain, opened up her container. Despite their fugitive status, the siblings were taken on. Under the care of her brother and the crew, she grew slightly better, though still not fully sane.
